Details- Sponsor - Lautenberg
- Proposed - May 12, 1999
- Congressional Record Link - SA331
- Amends - SB254
- Amendments - None.
- Vote - 1999-111 - May 13, 1999, 51-47 Motion to table passed.
- Results - No change in law.
SynopsisThis bill:
- defined 'gun show'
- required registration of 'gun show promoters'
- built a new government infrastructure to deal with the paperwork (as defined) that would be generated by 'gun show promoters' at every 'gun show'
- criminalized firearm transfers without a background check.
AnalysisThe definition of 'gun show' is so wide open that events would unknowingly fall under the jurisdiction of the law. Organizers of such events could face felony arrest without even realizing they were running a 'gun show'.
