SynopsisThis is quite a long bill with many sections. Each section is a bill in and of itself. The Congressional Record synopsis make reference to the following: the Ballistics, Law Assistance, and Safety Technology Act of 2003 (BLAST Act) (sets forth firearms ballistics testing and record keeping requirements);
The Ballistics, Law Assistance and Safety Technology Act forces manufacturers to compile, store and provide the government images of bullets fired from new firearms.
AnalysisThe premise of the Ballistics, Law Assistance and Safety Technology Act is the idea that ballistic images can aide in crime investigations. In reality, Maryland has implemented such a system. It has cost millions and has be so ineffective that the Maryland State Police have pushed to end the system.
