I would like to take a moment to reply to an editorial in the Lincoln, NE Journal Star. In it Darlene Levos of Lincoln writes that concealed carry should be prohibited within Lincoln as her husband (deceased, former cop)... .. brought out the fact that if an individual is willing to carry a concealed weapon for protection against an attacker and is confronted by one, is he or she capable of using this gun on the attacker? If they find they are not able to do this, the attacker could very well take the gun away and use it on them instead. Somehow she thinks this equates to some gun owners being morons. No, Darlene, hesitation does not make you a moron. It makes you human. Your husband was exactly right. The decision to carry a concealed handgun is not one to be taken lightly. Every individual must evaluate their capacity to actually pull the trigger if it becomes necessary. Then you can only hope your evaluation was correct when the time comes. And even when you are prepared to act appropriately, every concealed handgun carrier must recognize that they are putting themselves in harms way. Dan McKown was a victim in the Washington Mall Shooting, in part, because he hesitated. He now has to live with the consequences of his decision: knowing others were shot, life in a wheel chair and months if not years of his own physical recovery. The bottom lines is the those who carry concealed weapons do it after much personal deliberation and do it for the good of those around them, including strangers, as well as themselves. Darlene should recognize that there are guns around her already. She just chooses to ignore those who would carry illegally because she believes she lives in a threat-free environment. Darlene has no right to decide for others how they should prepare themselves for the worst. And to Dan McKown, we applaud your bravery, hope for your speedy recovery and encourage those who can to make a donation to your medical bills. For further examination of this subject, I suggest Why Chris carries a gun... and so do I.
