One week into the 110th Congress, where do we stand? Six firearm related bills have been introduced. They are:

  • Senate Bill 77 - A bill to improve the tracking of stolen firearms and firearms used in a crime, to allow more frequent inspections of gun dealers to ensure compliance with Federal gun law, to enhance the penalties for gun trafficking, and for other purposes.
  • House Bill 73 - Citizens' Self-Defense Act of 2007
  • House Bill 96 - Gun Show Loophole Closing Act of 2007
  • House Bill 203 - To amend Federal crime grant programs relating to domestic violence to encourage States and localities to implement gun confiscation policies, reform stalking laws, create integrated domestic violence courts, and hire additional personnel for entering protection orders, and for other purposes.
  • House Bill 226 - Nationwide CCW Reciprocity
  • House Bill 256 - To prevent children's access to firearms.

The text of most of the bills is not yet available. From our limited information, four will probably be negative and two positive.

Given the history of the current Senate and House Democratic leaderships, I would not expect any of the positive bills to make further progress this session. The only hope would be to add positive bills as amendments to bills the Democrats consider 'must pass'. Otherwise, the benefit of introducing these bills now is to get a discussion going amongst progun politicians so that, in later sessions, they are already familiar with the then introduced bills.

Dems Giving Up On Gun Contro!! No, hones
Written by refugee on 2007-01-11 15:12:08
I wanted to comment on this by noting the irony of the gun show bill in light of frame 4 of
this cartoon

Can't do it, though, because the gun-show bill is not the Dems' fault: it's one of the two bills from turncoat Republicans. SB77 is Schumer's, though, and HB 256, the "for the children" bill, is from Sheila Jackson-Lee, turncoat Texan.

Nevertheless, nearly every line in that scribble is a lie. Of course the calm, reasonable Dems WANT to do everything the money-grubbing NRA bully accuses them of, they just know better than to press too hard right now while people are watching.

I suppose it wouldn't be fair to mention that gun control organizations also do a bit of fundraising (mostly from the rich and powerful); or that a lot of RKBA folk are not NRA members or supporters; or most especially, that what we want isn't for the Dems to give up trying to take our guns away, it's that we want them to embrace our right to be forcefully empowered, and to help dismantle the infringements they so enthusiastically established.
