This site is dedicated to the Second Amendment and as such, we want to maintain focus. But as our focus has been on the misdeeds of New Orleans law enforcement, we are going to go one more round on Louisiana.
For your consideration, I point you to the Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief and Economic Recovery Act.
It is a request for $250B by Louisiana and for Louisiana. Yes that was a B as in Billion.
Now let's back up.
Remember watching Mayor Nagin trying to evacuate his citizens by telling those without transport to hitch hike so the school buses could swim with fishes? Remember the looters gaining control as the police force 1) abandoned their posts, 2) ignored the problem, or 3) joined in the looting? Remember Nagin standing next to Police Chief Eddie Compass as Compass explained that all of the guns would be collected so that only law enforcement would have them? Remember the ABC tape of law abiding citizens bound while their guns are collected? And now we have Nagin and Compass telling a judge that there was no confiscation policy and no guns were collected.
This is the same place that believes that our hard earned money should be given to them for the country's benefit. Yea, right.
And how much is $250B?
- $55,555 for every man, woman and child that lives in Louisiana (est pop 4.5M).
- $125,000 for every employed person in the state (Aug 2005).
- $500,000 for every man, woman and child that lived in New Orleans before Katrina. (est: 500,000).
- $1,000,000 for every man, woman and child that is expected to live in New Orleans after reconstruction (est 250,000).
- More than we paid for the Louisiana Purchase, after adjustment for inflation.
- Two and one-half times the 2006 budget for the Department of the Army.
We don't know where most of that money is supposed to go, but we do know that $40B is supposed to go to the Army Corp of Engineers. That amount is 10 times their current annual budget and 16 times what they have estimated it would cost to protect New Orleans from a category 5 storm. The bill specifically exempts this money from any local contribution requirements for the projects funded. And all this money is supposed to be controlled by a Louisiana owned commission.
We have not examined the gun control records of Louisiana Sens. David Vitter (R) and Mary Landrieu (D), but we really don't care at this point. The federal budget is not a candy store for these kids to pillage while playing on the country's sympathies. They both need to go.
Does anyone else see the stupidity of rebuilding a coastal city that sits below sea level?
If New Orleans wants to become a tourist mecca again, let's let the environment return to its natural state and declare the area a National Monument dedicated to the futility of fighting mother nature.
