Here is a textbook example of what not to do. First, the question: What should you do to anger the maximum number of women in the shortest period of time? Answer: Attack another woman through her kids. US magazine has done just that and the response is impressive. Privately owned, it will be near impossible to judge the financial effects of their mistake. But you can guarantee is already one in a big way. Don't believe me? Go read the reader comments section on the Palin article. Here are two typical comments: US Magazine! You are pathetic to reveal Republican VP hopeful Sarah Palan in such a negative light. I was outraged this morning when I learned of the stark comparisons your magazine made between Obama and Palan for the cover of your mag. I have been a Democratic for years, but am now considering changing my party to Republican after seeing Sarah Palan's name dragged through the mud by the media. From now on whenever I'm standing in the line at the checkout, I will purposely avoid picking up your magazine and will insist my daughters do the same. Cindy and As the media keeps up it's onslaught of lies and and biased reporting, you're pushing more and more over the the McCain/Palin ticket. As someone who was an independent, you've now pushed me over not only the McCain/Palin ticket, but I'm sending the campaign a donation and volunteering to work on their campaign. From searching through the internet for facts on Palin, she's one person that seems to truly want change in this country. Good for her. Change is what's needed. Shame on US Weekly. I'll take a day off work just to contact your advertisers. At this moment there are 3700 comments and that number is growing fast. The majority of those commenting say they will never read US again. There are calls to boycott the magazine advertisers. And there are readers saying they will vote for McCain/Palin because of the article. Backlash can be painful. If you find the cover as offensive as the majority of the country, call your local grocery stores and have the issue pulled off the shelves. Due to the reader demographics of US, this would probably be most effectively done by the women in the house. Hit them where it counts and quickly. Update: Who has writen for US? How about Bill Clinton and Michelle Obama. Update: US magazine closed the commenting after 5600 comments and disabled visibility to what had been written.
