September 7, 2005 - Excise Taxes Ended for Gunsmiths
User Rating: / 0
Wednesday, 07 September 2005
26 USC 4181 imposed an excise tax on each firearm manufactured or imported into the US. Section 1131 of H.R.3 ended that tax, which was passed onto the consumer, for manufacturers and gunsmiths that produce fewer than 50 firearms per year. This change is tough to find as it is buried in the 'Highway Reauthorization and Excise Tax Simplification Act of 2005'. It was passed July 29 and goes into effect after September 30. Well, Congress took most of August off, as is traditional. Some did come back to deal with the affects of Katrina, but they are back to the basics today.

August 29, 2005 - Recess Coming To An End

Tuesday, 06 September 2005
Next Tuesday, September 6th, Congress will be starting the second session of the 109th Congress. There are many bills we like and many we don't. But, the next gun control measure to be dealt with will be the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act in the House. They have the choice of either using the version already introduced into the House - HR800, or they can pick up where the Senate passed S.397.

We expected it sooner or later, but the day has come. The Forum was hacked and we lost about 170 posts. Not the end of the world in the grand scheme. But we have moved to an admin approval system for new ids on the forum. We apologize for the inconvenience, but it is necessitated by the immatureness of our opponents.

It was never the intention of this site to get involved with state or local politics beyond the Forum. But when something does not pass the smell test, you feel compelled to warn people that there is a stink headed their way. And so it is for Cook County, Illinois.

August 22, 2005 - Government M14s
User Rating: / 0

It appears that the petition pointed to by Triggerfinger may be old enough to be a waste  of time. But the issue does bring up some questions:

  • Is it time to try to remove the Hughes Amendment from FOPA 86?
  • If not the whole Hughes Amendment, can we get a bill passed to disable a part of the Hughes Amendment so that pre-May 1986 full-auto weapons could, once again, be registered? This would allow LEO and military surplus firearms go into the civilian supply.
  • Could we get a bill passed forcing all military rifles, shotguns and side arms to be disposed of by the CMP?
We can not wait until the M16 goes surplus to start the fight. If we do, it will be too late.
