The Congressional Record shows 3 amendments being proposed and 22 more submitted to S.397 as of last night. The key here is that proposed amendments will be heard on the floor and the submitted ones may never reach the floor for consideration.
The 3 proposed amendments are as follows:
- SA1605 - Craig - To amend the exceptions.
- SA1606 - Frist - To make clear that the bill does not apply to actions commenced by the Attorney General to enforce the Gun Control Act and National Firearms Act.
- SA1626 - Kohl - To amend chapter 44 of title 18, United States Code, to require the provision of a child safety lock in connection with the transfer of a handgun.
Research will take time, but look for details later today. Write Comment (0 Comments) |

Today the bill moved from the 'Motion to Proceed' phase to actually being on the Senate floor. Anti-gunners attempted to amend S.397 but have been unsuccessful so far.
There is an agreement to hear SA1626 tomorrow. It was referred to as a trigger lock law, but specifics are unknown. It's success is not assured, thankfully. Write Comment (0 Comments) |

Just like we should not support those who do not support us, we should support those who do. Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco has invited the NRA national convention for 2007. Cast your vote here and we will forward the results to the NRA.
On a personal note, I don't know if the kind of facilities are available in Louisiana in the numbers usually required for a convention of this size. I also suggest that it really doesn't matter. Fighters for the Second Amendment are used to roughing it a little bit. I would have no problem staying in a 3 Star instead of a 5 Star hotel if it meant financially supporting an area of Constitutionally minded people where our spending would have a measurable, positive impact.
On a site note, this poll was started by a user, not the site. We invite our readers to have an impact and shape directions of the site. Provide Feedback and let us know what you think. Write Comment (0 Comments) |

12:45PM ET - Majority Leader Senator Frist expresses his expectation that work on S.397 be completed before the summer recess. The anti-gunners are angry.
At 1:19 PM ET a roll call vote was completed on cloture to bring S.397 to the Senate floor. By a vote of 66-32 the cloture passed. This vote only limits debate on the Motion to Proceed and was not an up/down vote on the bill itself. Debate has begun.
Debate on the Motion to Proceed is to restart at 9:30AM ET. The schedule indicates that they expect a vote to open the floor to amendments at 2:00PM ET. So, CSPAN2 will probably have S.397 coverage all day tomorrow. Write Comment (0 Comments) |

S.397 made a small step forward on Friday when Sen. McConnell started the cloture procedure on the bill. Cloture is a procedure to prevent filibuster. Given that the 60th cosponsor of the bill is supposed to be posted today, there may be significant action on this bill this week.Write Comment (0 Comments) |
