The NFA Owners Association through Of Arms and the Law has information that the NFA database is going to be auditted. They key sentence in the DOJ letter is:

In response to correspondence we have recieved expressing concerns over the accuracy and completeness of the NFRTR, the OIG plans to initiate a review of the ATF's management of the NFRTR in late 2005.

Goes to show you that getting Congress involved can have positive effects. Go check out Reports of audit of NFA database.
