Written by achilles on 2007-05-22 22:51:10 I looked at the text of the bill, and it's definitely not good. It further implements the godawful Lautenburg Amendment, repeats the ridiculous "mental defective" terminology from the 1968 GOA, and doesn't repeal the anachronisms in Section 922. But how do you know the NRA supports it, aside from GOA's vague cite to Newsweek on their website? |

We believe that the NICS should serve the intent of Congress, which is to prohibit the sale of firearms to criminals and other prohibited persons, such as adjudicated mental defectives. However, we must not forget that the NICS also serves the purpose of clearing firearm purchases by law-abiding Americans. Too often, the system has been abused and has not delivered on the promise of a fair and instant check. --------- That is the closes thing to a statement of support I can find on the NRA's web site. A friend with high level contacts in the NRA also confirms that they are going to support it. They are calling it a "compromise bill" but when the NRA compromises, we never get anything in our favor. A compromise for us is always giving up ground. |
