Gun Law News

I present for your consideration Sportsmen for Clinton? and Sportsmen for Obama? The next presidential election will be especially important in case the Democrats retain control of the House and Senate.

Stupidity tends to make me angry. Stupidity on a scale grand enough to cost lives really pisses me off.

“I’m sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly’s actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus.”  - response to the failure of House Bill 1572 , which would have permitted college students and employees the right to carry handguns on campus. - 01/2006
"Guns don't belong in classrooms. They never will. Virginia Tech has a very sound policy preventing same." - 09/05/2006
Larry Hincker, Associate Vice-President for University Relations, Virginia Tech

Two hundred and twenty-three days later, on April 16, 2007 Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people and wounded many more.

I went to VA Tech in the late 70s. I can guarantee that there were guns on campus with 100% accuracy. Rifles were around during hunting season. Handguns were around as well. One friend had a 1911 in his closet in Pritchard. The only reason I did not store a gun on campus was that I moved to off campus housing after my freshmen year before I bought my first gun. So do not let them fool you into thinking their policy was successful for decades. It was only ignored.

Of course it was many years before concealed carry, so having students armed in class was not a possibility for the law abiding.

Time has brought change with concealed carry, but not in many places. These are lost opportunities for life when the criminal or nut job decides a gun free zone for others is also a free fire zone for them.

At this point, if you think I am nuts, consider Cho's results with those at the Colorado Springs church shooting. Seven thousand people in the church at the time and only two were killed thanks to an equiped volunteer with the attitude to use the right tool.

What does not change over time is human nature. The law abiding will continue to be. Criminals and nut jobs will also continue to be. Those stupid enough to think differently will continue to be stupid. And the stupid in power will continue to enable the needless loss of life.

What can never change is the sense of loss for the relatives and friends of the victims. Do not forget Cho's parents who probably have their feelings compounded by a special hell.

To be fair, Larry Hincker is just a mouth piece and probably not a decision maker in policy. He still shows up as a VA Tech contact with the same title.

And for you gun grabbers out there, do not try to tell me that those with guns on campus were breaking the law. VA Tech policy is not law. They could throw you off campus. They could probably expell you from school. But they could not take you to court.
