SynopsisThis bill is a trigger lock law. It requires that a trigger lock be provided with every handgun transfer. This law does not apply to private firearm sales.
The law also provides for immunity from liability for those that use "secure gun storage or safety device with the handgun". See the text of the amendment for details.
AnalysisDifferent gun owners are in different situations. Some have small children and an available, loaded firearm would be a mistake. Others do not have children as residents or visitors to their home.
Responsible gun owners assess their needs and take care of their requirements without the need for legislation.
Irresponsible gun owners will not change their behavior by requiring the purchase of a trigger lock.
This bill will only serve to increase the total cost of firearms to the public.
On a personal note, I used to own a trigger lock. It was a waste of money. Safes are a better alternative for my situation. If the day comes that I am required to buy one, I will immediately attempt to resell it back to the gun shop. If that is unsuccessful, it will end up in a yard sale unopened.
